Speed Limit Changes for HGV's

From 6th April 2015, speed limits for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV's) on both single and dual carriageways in England and Wales have been increased by 10 mph.

The speed limit for HGV's over 7.5T on single carriageways has increased from 40mph to 50mph and on dual carriageways the increase is from 50mph to 60mph.

The change was first announced in July 2014 by Secretary of State for Transport, Claire Perry following a lengthy period of consultation, with a view to bringing the speed limits in England and Wales, which had remained unchanged since the 1980's, in line with many other European countries.

It is hoped that by reducing the 20mph difference in speed limits between HGV's and other vehicles to a difference of only 10mph, there will be far less road traffic accidents caused by dangerous overtaking.

The mandatory speed limiter specification of 56mph for HGV's remains the same in accordance with European Union law.
